Delisha_Bella Headshot

Bella is the first Medgar Evers College Student in 10 Years to Move Directly from a Bachelor?s Degree Program into a Ph.D. Program

Brooklyn, NY ? Senior Delisha Bella is the first student in 10 years to graduate from Medgar Evers College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Science and a minor in Chemistry who will move immediately into a doctoral program. Delisha was accepted into the State University at Albany (SUNY Albany) School of Public Health?s prestigious Environmental Health Sciences program, and will spend the summer in Florida interning with the United States Department of Agriculture before starting classes in late August.

Delisha immigrated from Trinidad in 2000 in pursuit of higher education opportunities, first enrolling at Medgar Evers College as an accounting major. In her first year, she met Physical Environmental and Computer Science (PECS) Department Deputy Chair Dr. Dereck Skeete who encouraged her to change her major to science.

?Delisha brings great pride to our campus with this significant accomplishment,? said Medgar Evers College President Dr. William L. Pollard. ?Her interest in science has transcended boundaries, serving as an inspiration to other students who are pursuing similar career and educational paths; she is a credit to Medgar Evers College.?

?Graduating from Medgar Evers College with this degree and the opportunity that I have been granted at the State University of Albany is incredibly fulfilling,? said Delisha. ?I have been the recipient of care and consideration from great faculty who have been supportive of me from my first day. I am grateful to Dr. Dereck Skeete, Dr. Christopher Boxe, and Dr. Edward Catapane who have been great mentors, and I look forward to their continued support and guidance as I leave the safety of Medgar Evers College.?

Since changing majors, Delisha has been dedicated to ensuring that young African American and Hispanic children understand the importance of the STEM field, even appearing in a video urging middle schoolers to pursue studies in the disciplines. At the College, she reactivated the dormant Environmental Science Club holding the position of President for three years, resulting in the re-invigoration of the Student Association for the Environment, (SAFE), and the creation of a campus recycling program for which funds raised provide scholarships for other students.

The five-year doctoral program in Environmental Health Sciences at SUNY Albany is designed to prepare students for scholarly and professional positions and careers in academia, government and industry. The program emphasizes the application of biological, physical, and medical sciences to the solution of environmental and public-health problems. Delisha plans to focus her studies on Environmental Chemistry and is looking forward to completing lab rotations in Environmental Toxicology, Environmental & Occupational Health and Environmental Chemistry, working closely with faculty conducting research in each area during her first two years.

A 2013 Betty Shabazz scholarship recipient, Delisha has presented her research activity work at the University of Conception (Chile); University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC); the National Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS), and the MACUB Conference. In 2012, she was actively involved in research at the University of Maine. In her final year at Medgar Evers College, Delisha enrolled in CUNY?s Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP), conducting environmental research with PECS Department Chemistry Professor Dr. Christopher Boxe.

?Delisha?s story illustrates the transformative power of the mission of Medgar Evers College,? said Interim Provost & Senior Vice President Karrin E. Wilks. ?The faculty? of the School of Science, Health and Technology, under the leadership of Dean Mohsin Patwary, are all to be commended for the tremendous work and commitment to developing students like Delisha. We are proud of her and look forward to her continued success.?

?The School of Science, Health & Technology has been very fortunate to receive support from a variety of benefactors who feel as strongly as we do about the study of science,? said Dean Mohsin Patwary. ?Their generosity and a committed staff give us the ability to work with, and train great students like Delisha who keep inspiring us .?

?Delisha is a very dedicated student and gives her all to whatever she works on,? said PECS Deputy Chair Dr. Skeete. ?I?ve always been impressed with the passion she has for her work and the level of her commitment.? We are all exceptionally proud of her and her accomplishments.?

Before migrating to the United States, Delisha successfully completed her CXC exams in Trinidad with distinctions in History and Principles of Accounts, and later, she completed Advanced levels (A Levels) in Sociology, History, and English Literature, and followed this with nearly two years in Law school. She also has a creative and musical side having previously been signed to a record label as part of a singing trio called 2shi, and has established ?Volcanoes Production?, which prepares children to participate in the Kiddies Carnival Parade during the West Indian Labor Day festivities. Delisha teaches dance classes in ballet, modern and Caribbean rhythms, and also teaches music at her daughter?s ?school.

A 3.6 GPA student, Delisha is also an on-campus leader having served as Corresponding Secretary for the Student Government Association, and currently as SGA Vice President for Evening and Weekend students. After completing her Ph.D., she hopes to share her experiences with young people in the Caribbean with the intent of encouraging them to consider careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Particulate matter emissions: Trimmers and chainsaws are worse than highway traffic

May 30, 2013 ? Motorway maintenance workers are exposed to various harmful emissions. Surprisingly, motorised hand-held tools such as strimmers (string trimmers) and chainsaws, rather than motorway traffic, are responsible for the highest emissions of particulate matter.

These are the conclusions of a study supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).

The study was conducted between May 2010 and February 2012 by researchers working with Michael Riediker at the Institute for Work and Health in Lausanne. They accompanied 18 maintenance workers on 50 working days during tasks such as clearing snow, mending crash barriers, cleaning drains, cutting wood or mowing grass on the motorway central reservation. They measured the levels of air pollution, particulates and noise to which workers were exposed during each activity. The result compared to the average population, maintenance workers are exposed to between three and eight times higher particulate levels. In addition, noise levels often exceed the critical level of 85 decibels.

"Real belchers"

Surprisingly, motorway traffic is not the main source of noise and pollutants. More than 50 percent of airborne particulates are emitted by strimmers and chainsaws. "The small combustion engines which the workers carry on their backs use petrol with oil additives. This makes them real belchers," says Reto Meier, the lead author of the study. The quickest way to reduce particulate levels, therefore, is to improve the engines in these machines. This is primarily a challenge for the manufacturers, but Meier adds that employers can also play a role by considering emission levels when purchasing equipment.

Hearing protection

Maintenance workers are exposed to the highest noise levels when using pneumatic drills. But the use of strimmers or chainsaws and the traffic during maintenance work in tunnels also give rise to noise levels of 90 decibels or more. Researchers noticed that workers wear hearing protection reliably when they are the cause of the noise, but often fail to do so when the noise is caused by their colleagues or by the traffic. "To prevent damage to the ears, protection should be worn whenever possible," says Meier.

First quarter GDP revised slightly lower; austerity bites

By Jason Lange

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A drop in government spending dragged more on the U.S. economy than initially thought in the first three months of the year, although consumer spending looked relatively resilient to Washington's austerity drive.

Other reports on Thursday showed the number of new jobless claims rose modestly last week while contracts on previously owned homes climbed to a three-year high in April.

Together, the reports pointed to an economy that has held up reasonably well despite government constraints, but nevertheless faced headwinds severe enough to dissuade the U.S. Federal Reserve from trimming its monetary stimulus in the immediate future.

"(The reports) paint the picture of an economy with strengthening fundamentals that is facing significant fiscal drag," said Ellen Zentner, an economist at Nomura in New York.

Gross domestic product, a measure of the country's total economic output, expanded at a 2.4 percent annual rate during the first quarter, down a tenth of a point from an initial estimate, the Commerce Department said.

Analysts had forecast a 2.5 percent gain.

Government spending tumbled at a 4.9 percent annual rate, which was faster than the 4.1 percent rate initially estimated. Also holding back growth during the quarter, businesses outside the farm sector stocked their shelves at a slower pace.

Washington has been tightening its belt for several years but ramped up austerity measures in 2013, hiking taxes in January and slashing the federal budget in March.

"We are dramatically under-spending in Washington," said Michael Strauss, a market strategist at Commonfund in Wilton, Connecticut.

U.S. stocks rose and the dollar weakened as some investors bet the data could dissuade the Fed from rushing to taper a bond buying program that has acted as a bulwark against government belt tightening. Prices for U.S. government debt pared losses.

Despite the signs of a substantial fiscal drag, the GDP report also highlighted a resilience that has surprised many economists.

Consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of U.S. economic activity. rose at a 3.4 percent annual rate, up two tenths of a point from the government's previous estimate.

Excluding the volatile inventories component, GDP rose at an upwardly revised 1.8 percent rate, slightly higher than analysts had forecast. This suggests that an improvement in hiring and incomes over the last year has helped keep economic momentum intact.

"(It's) steady as she goes," said Stephen Stanley, an economist at Pierpont Securities in Stamford, Connecticut

HOUSING RECOVERY

Most economists still expect economic growth will slow around the middle of 2013 as budget cuts are enacted. But growth is seen picking up by year end, propelled by consumer spending and an apparently entrenched housing market recovery.

In April, the National Association of Realtors' index of signed contracts for home resales rose 0.3 percent to 106.0, the highest reading since April 2010.

The housing market recovery is being driven by the Fed's very easy monetary policy stance, which has kept mortgage rates low. Although speculation the Fed could begin to curtail its bond buying within a few months has driven mortgage rates sharply higher in recent days, economists say the fundamentals of the housing recovery still appear strong.

A separate report showed the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly rose last week, but not enough to suggest a shift in the recent pattern of steady job gains.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 354,000, above analysts' expectations, Labor Department data showed.

Safer mad cow rating could boost U.S. beef exports

By Ros Krasny

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) has upgraded the United States' risk classification for mad cow disease to its safest level, which could increase U.S. beef exports, the U.S. Agriculture Department said on Wednesday.

The decision to rank the United States' risk as "negligible" instead of "controlled" came at the OIE's annual meeting in Paris. Its scientific arm earlier recommended the upgrade after reviewing U.S. safeguards.

The ranking puts the United States among countries said to have the lowest risk for the fatal, brain-wasting disease formally known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy.

The new risk category was a "strong foundation" for increasing U.S. beef and beef product exports, USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack said in a statement.

Vilsack said the United States would press its trading partners "to base their decisions on science, consistent with international standards."

The U.S. Cattlemen's Association, a trade group, has said the safer designation would be "a big step toward enhancing our export opportunities."

Four cases of BSE have been reported in the United States since 2003. The most recent was in April 2012.

U.S. safeguards include a ban on using ruminant parts in cattle feed and keeping spinal cords, brains and nervous tissue, the items most at risk of infection, out of the food supply. USDA tests about 40,000 head a year for the disease.

Sprint, SoftBank agree to U.S. national security deal

By Alina Selyukh

(Reuters) - Sprint Nextel Corp and Japan's SoftBank Corp said on Wednesday they had reached a national security agreement with U.S. authorities, overcoming a major hurdle for the Japanese company's $20.1 billion bid to control the wireless carrier.

Even with that approval, there are still a number of regulatory, congressional and investor hurdles facing SoftBank before it can close on its plan to break into the U.S. market. One influential U.S. senator said on Wednesday he was "carefully examining" the approval to see if it eased his security concerns.

The companies said they had received notice from the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) that it had completed its national security review of the proposed deal and there were no unresolved issues.

The approval was a blow to Dish Network, which launched an unsolicited $25 billion offer for Sprint in April.

Dish has mounted an aggressive lobbying campaign, trying to convince Washington decision-makers that foreign ownership of Sprint posed threats to U.S. national security.

In a statement late on Wednesday, Dish said the CFIUS agreement failed to address the relevant national security concerns, and the company called on Congress to conduct a review of the whole process.

On paper, all that stands in SoftBank's way now is approval from the government's "Team Telecom" security panel, the Federal Communications Commission and Sprint shareholders.

Dish, however, has been drumming up worries about the deal among lawmakers, regulators and investors, and now hopes those concerns could delay the FCC vote long enough for the shareholders to vote on June 12 on SoftBank's bid.

The FCC's transactions team is still reviewing SoftBank's bid for its market impact and no draft approval has yet circulated among the three commissioners' offices, two FCC sources said on Wednesday. A non-binding 180-day deadline for completing the review expires on Wednesday but the agency routinely extends flexible timelines.

The FCC traditionally can be reluctant to act in a way that would influence shareholders, and it remained unclear whether acting Chairwoman Mignon Clyburn's office would choose to follow CFIUS and act before a shareholder vote.

The chair's office declined comment.

NATIONAL SECURITY CONCERNS

To alleviate some national security concerns, SoftBank and Sprint agreed to several conditions, including giving the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice the power to review and veto new equipment purchases in certain circumstances.

Sprint disclosed some of the conditions in its filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday. The companies would also appoint a new Sprint board member, to be approved by the U.S. government, to oversee national security compliance.

As part of the deal with CFIUS, sources previously told Reuters that SoftBank had also agreed to remove equipment made by China's Huawei Technologies Co Ltd from Sprint and Clearwire Corp's networks if the deal was completed by the end of 2016.

Last week, Clearwire's board recommended Sprint's sweetened buyout offer for the company after Sprint raised its bid.

The question remains whether CFIUS approval with such conditions will ease the concerns of Senators Charles Schumer and John McCain, both of whom have sent letters to the FCC calling for careful scrutiny of SoftBank's offer on national security grounds.

"CFIUS has agreed that there are security concerns here, and we're carefully examining the conditions they've imposed to address them," Schumer said in a statement issued by his office.

One analyst said that in the end, even with those concerns, SoftBank was likely to win the approvals it needs.

"McCain and Schumer are not your average senators, so their concerns will definitely get maximum attention at the agencies. But Japan is considered a friendly country, an ally and unless there's more to come on the national security issue, I suspect regulators will end up greenlighting the deal," said Paul Gallant, a telecom policy analyst at Guggenheim Partners.

Japanese mobile operator SoftBank agreed to buy a 70 percent stake in Sprint last October.

Sprint shares rose 0.1 percent to $7.28 on Wednesday, while Dish fell 2.2 percent to $39.25.

Christie has absolute confidence in Rutgers leader

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? Gov. Chris Christie says he has "absolute confidence" in the president of Rutgers University as he deals with questions about his choice for the university's new athletic director.

Speaking on a monthly radio show Tuesday, Christie said Robert Barchi is the "right man for the job." Christie also says it's not his job to micromanage Rutgers' business.

Barchi has been criticized for his choice of Julie Hermann as athletic director this month. Former players on the University of Tennessee volleyball team she coached in the 1990s have said she verbally and emotionally abused them.

Walking or bicycling to work influenced by others

May 29, 2013 ? People who walk or bike to work are likely to influence their co-workers and partners to do the same, according to health researchers.

"Social influences are important, specifically interpersonal influences, such as spouses and co-workers," said Melissa Bopp, assistant professor of kinesiology, Penn State. She emphasized that community and employers also significantly influence whether people choose to actively commute.

More than 80 percent of American adults do not meet the guidelines for aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities, according to Healthy People 2020, a federal initiative that sets national objectives and monitors progress concerning the health of the population. Regardless of a chronic disease or disability, any regular physical activity can improve health and quality of life. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends at least two and a half hours of moderate-intensity aerobic activity a week or one hour and 15 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity a week for adults.

Active commuting (AC) -- physical exercise, such as bicycling or walking, as a way to travel to and from work -- is one way to help adults integrate the recommended activity into their daily routine.

Bopp and colleagues report in the online issue of the American Journal of Health Behavior that married people were more likely to participate in AC than non-married people, men actively commuted more often than women and mothers were even less likely to actively commute.

Four of the variables studied probed the connection between interpersonal relationships and AC. Having a spouse who actively commutes or co-workers who actively commute had a positive influence on the decision to do the same. The perception that a spouse would approve of AC or that co-workers would approve of AC also had a positive influence, but with slightly less impact.

However, at an individual level variables that were negatively related to active commuting included age, BMI, number of children, number of chronic diseases and number of cars in the household.

Bopp noted she was surprised to discover how many variables were significantly related to active commuting. People who were comfortable with their bicycling skills were more likely to actively commute, as were those who believed they had a shorter biking or walking time to work. Believing that an employer supports active commuting and working for an employer who supports AC, living in a community that supports AC and believing that the community is supportive of pedestrians and bicyclists were all positively significantly related to active commuting.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the researchers found that lack of on-street bike lanes, off-street bike and walking paths, and sidewalks all negatively influenced active commuting. Difficult terrain, bad weather and the speed and volume of traffic along the commuting route were also significantly related to people deciding to not actively commute.

The researchers distributed surveys to 9,766 people across the mid-Atlantic States and received 1,234 viable completed surveys. The respondents were between the ages of 18 and 75, employed full- or part-time and physically able to walk or bike to work. The participants responded to questions and statements including how they traveled to work, whether or not their spouse and coworkers influenced their choice on how they traveled to/from work, if their employer supported actively commuting, how confident they were with their cycling skills and how bicycle-friendly their community was.

The researchers did not include any questions about leisure-time activity or any other forms of physical activity participation in this study.

Moving forward, Bopp and colleagues believe that the findings of this study provide a foundation for large-scale strategies to target population-level AC patterns.

"We have to look at the complete picture and look at individual thoughts and beliefs (about AC)," said Bopp. "This is a complex problem that we need to think about at multiple levels to address influences on behavior."

Also working on this research were Andrew T. Kaczynski, assistant professor of health promotion, education and behavior, University of South Carolina, and Matthew E. Campbell, research assistant, Department of Kinesiology, Penn State.

Obama to nation: Don't take US troops for granted

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) ? Reflecting on the personal toll of war, President Barack Obama on Monday implored a nation in which few volunteer for the armed forces to "always remember and to be worthy of the sacrifice" of its fallen heroes.

Addressing a Memorial Day service at Arlington National Cemetery, Obama said he worries that U.S. servicemen and women ? including thousands he sent to war in more than four years as commander in chief ? aren't being fully appreciated in an era in which "most Americans are not directly touched by war."

Less than 1 percent of the population of more than 313 million people serves in the military, officials have said.

Obama said he couldn't explain why few are touched by war, but he allowed that it could be because of the bravery and skill of the all-volunteer force, along with new technologies that make it possible to carry out missions while endangering fewer personnel. Contrast that with generations past, when Obama said millions of Americans contributed during World War II, including his grandparents, and when "just about everybody knew somebody" who served in the Vietnam War.

"As a consequence, not all Americans may always see or fully grasp the depth of sacrifice, the profound costs that are made in our name ? right now, as we speak, every day," Obama said.

He cited fears of loved ones being forgotten that he said were expressed in letters he had received from a Naval reservist recently returned from Afghanistan and from a Charlotte, N.C., woman whose two sons are Marines who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Obama noted that his address here last year was the first time in nine years that Americans were no longer fighting and dying in Iraq, where the war has ended. The U.S. also is ending its mission in Afghanistan, with most of the more than 60,000 troops stationed there due to come home by the end of next year.

"But even as we turn the page on a decade of conflict," Obama said, "our nation is still at war."

He urged Americans, as they go about their daily lives, to remember that their fellow countrymen are still serving, still fighting and still putting their lives on the line every day.

"Let it be our task, every single one of us, to honor the strength and the resolve and the love these brave Americans felt for each other and for our country," the president said. "Let us never forget to always remember and to be worthy of the sacrifice they make in our name."

Obama spoke at the nation's hallowed burial ground four days after declaring in a major national security address that the U.S. has taken down the al-Qaida terrorist organization, particularly after the killing of its leader, Osama bin Laden. But terrorist threats remain, he said, cautioning the U.S. against letting its vigilance slide.

The president spoke at the amphitheater of Arlington National Cemetery on a sun-splashed morning after he placed a wreath of red, white and blue flowers at the Tomb of the Unknowns and observed a moment of silence.

In the speech, Obama reflected on the human toll of armed conflict, noting that "every loss is devastating" for the parents who lose a child, the husbands and wives who lose a partner and the children who lose a parent.

As the one who has final say on whether to send troops into combat, Obama said he feels the losses, too.

"I feel it every time I meet a wounded warrior, every time I visit Walter Reed and every time I grieve with a Gold Star family," he said, referring to families whose loved ones were killed during military service.

He last visited wounded troops at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., in March.

Before returning to the White House, Obama stopped at the cemetery's Section 60, the final resting place for U.S. troops killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, including two whose stories the president shared in his remarks.

He and first lady Michelle Obama spent more than a half hour there, walking among the white headstones and greeting and taking pictures with many of those who were at the cemetery to pay their respects.

Before departing the White House, the president and first lady held a private breakfast in the State Dining Room for Gold Star families.

I started having this pain in my right leg. I was diagnosed with Stills Disease when I was about ten, so therefore it could be that. I also kept getting this strange sensation on my face, and keep getting itchy phases on my back... Do you think Aspergers could play a part in this? Help Please!

Kerry makes 1st official sub-Saharan Africa visit

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) ? Making his first official trip to sub-Saharan Africa, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Saturday demanded that Nigeria respect human rights as it cracks down on Islamist extremists and pledged to work hard in the coming months to ease tensions between Sudan and South Sudan.

Kerry, attending the African Union's 50th anniversary, backed the Nigerian government's efforts to root out Boko Haram, an al-Qaida-linked radical sect. But he said there is no excuse for abuses by armed forces in Nigeria's long-neglected north, where President Goodluck Jonathan has declared emergency rule.

"We defend the right completely of the government of Nigeria to defend itself and to fight back against terrorists," Kerry said. He added, however, that he has raised his concerns with Nigerian officials to insist on the military "adhering to the highest standards and not itself engaging in atrocities."

"One person's atrocities do not excuse another's," said Kerry, who later made his case directly to Jonathan over lunch. "Revenge is not the motive. It's good governance, it's ridding yourself of a terrorist organization so that you can establish a standard of law that people can respect."

Amnesty International says Nigeria's military has committed "grave human rights violations" over the last three years, including executions and kidnappings. It is reporting continued wrongdoing, while Human Rights Watch says satellite images showed "massive destruction of civilian property" in a military raid last week.

Speaking to reporters alongside Ethiopian Foreign Minister Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Kerry also blamed Sudan's government for much of the tension along its volatile border with South Sudan. He says residents in the contested areas of Blue Nile and South Kordofan don't want to be subjected to strict Islamist rules.

Both areas border the new nation of South Sudan, which gained independence in 2011 under an agreement that ended decades of civil war. Many residents are sympathetic to the South, and both areas have experienced regular violence in recent years.

"There are very significant border challenges, but they're bigger than that," Kerry said. "You have people who for a long time have felt that they want their secular governance and their identity respected."

"They don't want independence; they are not trying to break away from Sudan," he said. But he said the response from Sudan's government has been to "press on them through authoritarian means and violence an adherence to a standard that they simply don't want to accept with respect to Islamism."

"That's the fundamental clash," Kerry said.

He acknowledged, however, the North's concerns that the South is fueling rebels in the areas and said the U.S. would try to work with Ethiopia and other international partners to ease tensions. He said he'd soon appoint a new American envoy to both countries.

Kerry met Sudan's foreign minister later Saturday.

His meetings in Ethiopia's capital also included the U.N. and African Union chiefs and Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi.
