Drug maker routed bribes through travel agents, China says

Staff Kansas City Business Journal

Chinese officials say pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline used travel agents to pay millions of dollars in bribes, Reuters reports.

The British drug company transferred as much as $489 million to more than 700 travel agencies and consultants as part of the bribery scheme, according to Chinese officials. The travel agents allegedly transferred the money to doctors and officials by creating fake conference services, Reuters reports.

Pharmaceutical companies, like companies in other industries, are eyeing the huge Chinese market as a growth vehicle.
