Though I've been out of the genealogy research loop for a while, there was a time when I was doing extensive family history research, particularly on my mom's side of the family. My quest took me from Georgia to Washington, D.C. where I combed through piles of archives and census records. Eventually, all the information I collected during that time found their greater purpose as my maternal relatives gathered themselves for another fight to have their ancestral land in Harris Neck, Georgia returned to them. By way of an introduction to Harris Neck and my family tree, I wanted to share a few posts from my old blog Passing Plecker. This is part one of a two part series I wrote in 2009.

Part One: Who You f'uh?

When my grandfather died many years ago, I remember falling into a fitful sleep on the living room floor of my grandparents' house in Savannah. I woke up the next morning with the vague memory of a dream about my Grampa and with an overwhelming need to find out everything I could about my family's history. The grief I felt about his death left me feeling rootless. It was as if someone had taken away vital link to my identity. I'm not exactly sure why that particular feeling informed my grief, but I knew that digging up my family tree would help. My grandfather's own father outlived him by quite a few years, but he never really spoke much about his past and he had been estranged from his children for many years. So when Great Granddaddy passed, all the questions I had were left unanswered once again. Since I didn't have very many links left to track down my Grampa's roots, I began my obsessive search with my Gramma's side of the family.

I spent pretty much all of my childhood summers in Savannah with my grandparents. There, I heard about people in my family who spoke Geechee and heard that same word applied to my inhuman consumption of rice. I could eat it by the bag full. (I still can though age and an expanding behind have considerably curbed my consumption) It was this word, Geechee, that became the central point to my understanding of Gramma's family and my own heritage. One summer, after my Grampa's passing, I took a trip to Harris Neck where my grandmother was born (the country as she called it), armed with a notebook and her ancient tape recorder ready to capture family history straight from the mouths of my relations.

Over a plates of freshly caught whiting covered in hot sauce with a slice of white bread, Wilson Moran and his mother Mary told me the story of Harris Neck. Mr. Moran is a self motivated researcher with an encyclopedic knowledge of Harris Neck's history. He told me that Harris Neck had been a thriving, self sufficient community of fisherman who lived close to the land which had been allotted to their ancestors during Reconstruction. The town was isolated with no bridges or real significant roads connecting it to the wider world. It had its own sheriff (one of my relatives as it happened) and post office.

The only things people had to leave the community for were cloth and flour. Wilson said that if you came to Harris Neck, part of the customary greeting would be the question "Who you f'uh?" which translates roughly to who are your people?/who are you related too? With a single reply of your kinship ties to the community, one could be instantly recognized as family. It strikes me now as I recall this, how that custom trumps all of the superficial racialized methods of marking kinship.

Toward the end of our visit, Mary shared with us a song, "in African" that her mother taught her as a little girl. It was this song that was the subject of a documentary called "The Language You Cry In." Because of the song in African Mary's mother Amelia taught her as as child, scholars were able to trace its back to the specific people in Sierra Leone with whom it began. It turned out to be a burial song of the Mende people. That song tied Harris Neck and its descendants directly to a specific pre-slavery homeland. Harris Neck was a living, breathing tie to America's complex and bloody history.

That's why what ultimately happened to the town is devastating.

Rare cliffhanging plant species uses unique reproductive strategy

Thursday, September 13, 2012
(A) Topography of the habitat (Sopeira, Spanish Pyrenees), (B) flowering male plant, (C) flowering female plant with a visiting ant (Lasius), (D) male flowers with a visiting ant (Lasius), (E) female plant with two fruits, one at a crevice in the cliff wall (self sowing), (F) seed with elaiosome coating, (G) vial containing seeds in situ?for cafeteria experiments (Experiment I, see Materials and Methods), (H) ant removing a seed (Experiment I), and (I) tuber with old leaf scars marked with a red coloration, each dot corresponds to one year, and a ruler shows its size in mm. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0044657.g001

The Borderea chouardii plant, which is critically endangered and is found only on two adjacent cliff sides in the Pyrenees, employs a unique and risky doubly mutualistic reproductive strategy with local ants, according to research published Sep. 12 in the open access journal PLOS ONE.

The researchers, led by Maria Garcia of the Pyrenean Institute of Ecology (CSIC), found that two ant species acted as the main pollinators for the plant, while a third species dispersed seeds. About a third of the new seedlings censused over 17 years in vertical cliffs would come from such dispersal, while the remaining two thirds from self-sown seeds by the female plants. Such a strategy is risky, because if something were to happen to the local ant species the plant may not be able to continue reproducing, but the authors conclude that it can be successful in this particular case because of the plant's unusually long lifespan, in some cases reaching over 300 years, its climatically stable habitat, and its isolation from large herbivores.

Report: Maker of anti-Islamic film in hiding

By Mike Brunker, NBC News

Questions swirled Wednesday around the makers of a provocative anti-Islam movie blamed by some for triggering protests at U.S. diplomatic outposts in Egypt and Libya and sparking an attack on the latter that claimed the life of the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.

At least one clip from what is described as a feature film titled ?Innocence of Muslims? was posted on YouTube and later reposted after being translated into Arabic. The clip, an amateurish production featuring dozens of actors, portrays Muhammad, believed by Muslims to be God?s prophet, as a womanizer, a homosexual and a child abuser.

Reports published by The Associated Press and the Wall Street Journalidentified the filmmaker as Sam Bacile. The AP described Bacile as a 56-year-old Israeli American real estate developer from California; the Journal said he was a 52-year-old real estate developer, but did not say where he lived.?Both news organizations said that they interviewed Bacile, who was said to be in hiding, by phone, and both quoted him as saying the film was intended to show that "Islam is a cancer."

"This is a political movie," the AP quoted him as saying. "The U.S. lost a lot of money and a lot of people in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but we're fighting with ideas."

But by midday Wednesday, Bacile's credibility -- indeed his very existence -- were being questioned:

  • The Atlantic?quoted a man reported by the AP to be a consultant on the film, Steve Klein, as saying that ?Bacile? is a pseudonym and that the filmmaker ?is not Israeli and most likely not Jewish.?

Klein, a self-described militant Christian activist in Riverside, Calif., told the Atlantic ?he doesn?t know the man?s real name and indicated that the filmmaker contacted him because he leads anti-Islam protests outside mosques and schools.

  • A source close to the cast and crew of the film told NBC News that the man known as Bacile misled the actors and production crew.?

"The entire crew and cast are extremely upset and feel taken advantage of by the producer," the source said. "We are 100 percent not behind this film and were grossly misled about its intent and purpose. We are shocked by the drastic rewrites of the script and lies that were told to all involved. We are deeply saddened by the tragedies that have occurred."

  • Israeli officials also told the AP that there is no record of an Israeli citizen named Sam Bacile.
  • California corporate records show no one by that name as holding a real estate license there.

The 13-minute, English-language trailer was posted on YouTube in July by an account registered to Sam Bacile. The account, which was created in April, lists Bacile's age as 75 and has been used only twice apart from posting the trailer -- once to "like" another video and to make one comment, in Arabic. That comment, which referenced a debate on Egyptian TV over the "Innocence of Muslims" clip, was translated as, "Oh,?Animal, it?s 100% an American movie."

The trailer?shows an amateur cast performing a wooden dialogue of insults cast as?revelations about Muhammad.?

Muslims find it offensive to depict Muhammad in any manner, let alone insult the prophet. A Danish newspaper's 2005 publication of 12 caricatures of the prophet triggered riots in many Muslim countries.

The Journal reported the film had been promoted by Terry Jones, the Florida pastor whose burning of Qurans previously sparked deadly riots in Pakistan and other Muslim nations.

Jones, the pastor of the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Fla., told NBC News on Wednesday that he aired the trailer once in his makeshift church. But he said efforts to screen it on Tuesday, the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, were thwarted by technical difficulties.

NBC's Kerry Sanders talks about the controversial pastor's history of provocative acts against Islam and how he may be tied to an inflammatory film that has sparked uproar within the global Muslim community.

"We tried to stream it ? and every time we did that, it was cut off, disappeared,? he said.

A statement on the pastor?s political website, posted late Tuesday, said that the screening was to have been part of a day-long ?International Judge Muhammad Day? in which the Muslim prophet would be subjected to a mock trial for ?promoting murder, rape, and destruction of people and property through his writings called the Koran.?

Jones also told NBC?s Kerry Sanders that he had been in contact with the movie?s producer, but did not provide financial support for its production or distribution.

The AP also reported that Morris Sadek, an Egyptian-born Coptic Christian in the United States known for his anti-Islam views, said he was promoting the video on his website and on certain TV stations, which he did not identify.

Although it was posted to YouTube in July, the film only attracted attention in the Middle East after an unknown person recently dubbed it into Egyptian Arabic. That translation, which the man who identified himself as Bacile told the AP was accurate, has been broadcast repeatedly on Egyptian media in recent weeks after being seized upon by extreme Islamists who dislike the presence of the country?s Coptic Christians.

NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports on the death of the U.S. ambassador to Libya in an attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. The envoy is the first American ambassador killed on duty since 1979.

Film news site The Wrap said?the Arabic-dubbed version had garnered more than 40,000 views by Tuesday afternoon. However, that clip appeared to have been taken down on Wednesday.

The AP quoted the man who identified himself as Bacile as saying that the film was made in the summer of 2011, with 59 actors and about 45 people behind the camera. The Journal quoted him as saying that the film cost $5 million, which was raised from about 100 Jewish donors, whom he declined to identify.

The man also told the AP that the full film, which he said is three hours in length, was shown only once, to a mostly empty theater in Hollywood earlier this year.??

No record of such a screening could be found.

NBC News' Alfred Arian, Kerry Sanders and Bob Sullivan and the Associated Press contributed to this report.

L.A. man returns cash tossed from getaway car

In downtown Los Angeles, police chased four suspected bank robbers in a pursuit that ended with the suspects tossing money out the window. The lure of money caused people to line the streets looking for cash, creating an obstacle for police. ?NBC's Natalie Morales reports.

By Patrick Healy, NBCLosAngeles.com

Hundreds of people swarmed the streets in South Los Angeles Wednesday afternoon when suspected bank robbers led police on a pursuit while?tossing wads of cash out the window?of their getaway car.

"There were mothers leaving their kids and they were just grabbing the money, and there was just money in the air," said resident Sal Reyes. "It was just everywhere."

Many in the crowd took it as an opportunity to scoop up the loose bills, but Reyes says he was compelled to return the money he found.

He said he picked up the cash without initially knowing why it was on the ground. Someone explained to him that it was money from a bank robbery.

Several residents described the alleged robbers as modern-day Robin Hood figures, taking from the rich to give to those in one of the area's less affluent neighborhoods. But there?s no indication that was the intent when three men in ski masks allegedly robbed a Santa Clarita Bank of America. A fourth man was in the getaway car.

Reyes said he had to return the loot.

"You have to give it back. You can?t just go spend money that?s not yours," he said.

Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with crowds chanting, "We want money," and some gatherers dodging squad cars and climbing over vehicles caught in the melee.

"Everybody was just grabbing whatever they could," Reyes said.

Police on Wednesday urged the public to return any bills they found, emphasizing that receiving stolen property can be considered a crime in itself.

But officials say the smaller bills ? those in denominations of one, five, 10 and even 20 ? will likely go unnoticed and the bank?s insurance will pick up the tab.

Police did not disclose the amount of money taken from the bank.

All four suspects have been arrested, including two who had bailed out of the getaway car.

Health Care Cost: Expenses Hurt Elderly The Most, Report

Even with Medicare, seniors face incredible strain under health care costs, according to a new report.

The report, which appears in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, looked at data from more than 3,000 people covered by Medicare in 2002-2008 to gauge the impact of health care cost on seniors. Researchers measured how much Medicare-eligible seniors had spent out of pocket on healthcare in their last five years alive, and looked at how those costs weighed on their total household income.

After crunching the numbers, the report found that during that time period, more than 75 percent of Medicare-eligible households spent at least $10,000 out of pocket on health care. Spending for all participants during those last five years averaged $38,688, and for the remaining 25 percent the average expense was even greater: they spent a whopping $101,791 out of pocket. A quarter of participants also spent "more than their total household assets on healthcare," according to the report.

The report's researchers noted that expenses varied based on the type of illness participants faced, with dementia costing the most money (double the cost of cancer or gastrointestinal diseases).

Rising health care costs can't be ignored: in the last year, 58 percent of people didn't seek treatment they needed because it was too expensive, according to a survey done by the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, a nonprofit research organization based in Menlo Park, California. Protecting and keeping Medicare solvent has been caught in a political boondoggle. But with people living longer -- men can expect to live 81.6 years, up from 66.1 and women are living to 86, up from 73.5 -- and 70 percent of people over 65 needing long-term health care, the need for a "financially viable scheme" is dire, the report concluded.

Texas to open fastest US highway with 85 mph limit

(AP) ? Texas will soon open a stretch of highway with the highest speed limit in the country.

The Texas Transportation Commission has approved the 85 mph speed limit for a 41-mile-long toll road near the increasingly crowded Interstate 35 corridor between Austin and San Antonio.

The road runs several miles east of the interstate between two of the state's largest metropolitan areas. And while some drivers may be eager to put the pedal to the metal and rip through the Central Texas countryside, others are asking if it is safe.

"The research is clear that when speed limits go up, fatalities go up," said Russ Rader, a spokesman for the nonprofit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Higher speed limits get people to their destinations faster, Rader said, "But the trade-off is more crashes and more highway deaths."

A 2009 report in the American Journal of Public Health studied traffic fatalities in the U.S. from 1995 to 2005 and found that more than 12,500 deaths were attributable to increases in speed limits on all kinds of roads.

The study also said that rural highways showed a 9.1 percent increase in fatalities on roads where speed limits were raised, but did not cite specific numbers in those instances.

Most highways in the U.S. top out at 75 mph, and there are no longer any roads in the U.S. with no speed limit like Germany's autobahn. Some highways in rural West Texas and Utah have 80 mph speed limits.

The Texas Legislature last year approved 85 mph limits for some new stretches of road. The strip of toll road running from Austin to Seguin, about 35 miles northeast of San Antonio, will be the first to allow that speed when it opens in November.

The Texas Transportation Commission, which is appointed by Gov. Rick Perry, approved the 85 mph speed limit at a public meeting on Aug. 30. A transportation department spokesman said commissioners would not comment on their decision.

Agency officials had previously said they would study the toll road's topography, the speeds that most drivers were reaching, and the safety of access points and cross sections before approving the 85 mph speed limit.

"Safety is our top priority and tests have shown the designated speed is a safe one," agency spokeswoman Veronica Beyer said.

Alan Guckian, who lives in Austin and regularly drives to Seguin to visit family, said he'll likely use the road for convenience and the pleasure of driving fast.

"I would love it," Guckian said. "Sometimes it's fun to just open it up."

Steve Marcy sometimes uses another part of the toll road on his daily commute from Round Rock, north of Austin, to his job in San Antonio. The section he drives now has an 80 mph speed limit.

Marcy said he'd be comfortable driving 85, but would be concerned about others driving vehicles that are not in good condition.

"A tire blowout (at 85 mph) could be a big hazard," Marcy said.

Chris Lippincott, spokesman for SH 130 Concession Co. that is building the road, said the company is committed to operating a safe highway.

"On any road, drivers hold the key to safety based on traffic, travel conditions and the capabilities of their own vehicles," Lippincott said.

Toll prices have not yet been set for the new section. Marcy predicted the higher speed limit will attract new drivers, but said most won't think it's worth the cost of the tolls.

"For most people I talk to, it's a cost issue," Marcy said.

Jury convicts Drew Peterson of 3rd wife's death

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) ? Drew Peterson, the swaggering former suburban Chicago police officer who generated a media storm after his much-younger fourth wife vanished in 2007, was convicted Thursday of murdering his third wife in a case based mainly on secondhand hearsay statements from the two women.

Peterson, 58, sat stoically looking straight ahead and did not react as the verdict was read. Several of his third wife's relatives gasped before hugging each other as they cried quietly in the courtroom.

Illinois has no death penalty, and Peterson now faces a maximum 60-year prison term when sentenced in Kathleen Savio's death on Nov. 26.

The trial was the first of its kind in Illinois history, with prosecutors building their case largely on hearsay thanks to a new law, dubbed "Drew's Law," tailored to Peterson's case. That hearsay, prosecutors had said, would let his third and fourth wives "speak from their graves" through family and friends to convict Peterson.

Hearsay is any information reported by a witness that is not based on the witness' direct knowledge. Its use at the trial could also be grounds for an appeal from Peterson.

The verdict is a vindication for Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow and his team, who gambled by putting on a case that they themselves conceded was filled with holes. They then went on to commit a series of blunders during testimony that drew the judge's ire.

One question at trial was how much Peterson's personality might influence the jurors. Before his 2009 arrest, the glib, cocky Peterson seemed to taunt authorities, joking on talk shows and even suggesting a "Win a Date With Drew" contest. His notoriety inspired a TV movie starring Rob Lowe.

It all began with a gruesome discovery.

A neighbor came across Savio's body on March 1, 2004, and let out a scream. Others ran up the stairs of her suburban Chicago home to behold the scene: Savio lay face down in her dry bathtub. Her thick black hair was blood-soaked and she had a 2-inch gash on the back of her head.

The drowning death of the 40-year-old aspiring nurse was initially deemed an accident ? a freak slip in the tub. After Peterson's fourth wife, 23-year-old Stacy Peterson, went missing in 2007, Savio's body was exhumed, re-examined and her death reclassified as a homicide.

Peterson had divorced Savio a year before her death. His motive for killing her, prosecutors said, was fear that a pending settlement, which included their $300,000 home, would wipe him out financially.

The 12 jurors deliberated for more than 13 hours before reaching a decision. The seven men and five women included a poet, a letter carrier and a man who said his favorite TV show was "Criminal Minds." The jurors, who raised questions about whether they were taking the case seriously by donning different coordinated outfits each day of testimony, did not wear matching attire on Thursday.

Defense attorney Ralph Meczyk said Peterson was saddened by the verdict but didn't say much. He said the defense would appeal.

"Hearsay is the big issue. It's the law, but the law has to be changed," Meczyk said.

Fascination nationwide with the former Bolingbrook police sergeant arose from speculation he sought to parlay three decades of law enforcement expertise into getting away with murder.

"Finally somebody heard Kathleen's cry," her stepmother, Marcia Savio, told reporters after the verdict.

Savio's brother, Nick Savio, grew emotional as he read a statement from the family outside court, calling Drew Peterson a "cold-blooded killer" and saying "everyone gets payback for what they have done to others.

"Stacy, you are now next for justice," Nick Savio declared as he finished speaking.

Prosecutors suspect Peterson killed his pretty, sandy-haired fourth wife because she could finger him for Savio's death, but her body has never been found and no charges have ever been filed. Jurors weren't supposed to link her disappearance to Savio's death, and prosecutors were prohibited from mentioning the subject.

Stacy Peterson's family hoped a conviction in Savio's murder could lead to charges against Drew Peterson in Stacy's disappearance. He says his fourth wife ran off with another man and is still alive.

In trying Peterson for Savio's death, prosecutors faced enormous hurldes.

They had no physical evidence tying Peterson to Savio's death and no witnesses placing him at the scene. They were forced to rely on typically barred hearsay ? statements Savio made to others before she died and that Stacy Peterson made before she vanished. Illinois passed the hearsay law in 2008, making the evidence admissible at trials in rare circumstances.

The hearsay included friend Kristin Anderson testifying that Savio told her Peterson once warned her at knifepoint, "I could kill you and make it look like an accident."

Stacy Peterson's pastor, Neil Schori, testified she told him that her husband got up from bed and left their house in the middle of the night around the time of Savio's death. Drew Peterson later coached his fourth wife on how to lie to police, Schori said.

There was some damning testimony not based on hearsay.

A former co-worker of Peterson's, Jeff Pachter, testified that Peterson offered him $25,000 to hire a hit man to kill Savio, though he never followed through. After Savio was found dead, Peterson told him, "That favor I asked you ? I don't need it anymore."

Prosecutors had to establish the most basic fact for a murder trial: that there was actually a murder. Pathologists testified for the defense that Savio's wounds indicated an accident; those testifying for the state said it was impossible for a single fall to cause both the wound on the back of her head and the bruises on the front of her body.

Peterson's lawyers endeavored to cast doubt on the reliability of key witnesses. They accused Savio's sister, Susan Doman, of jazzing up her testimony to profit from a movie and book deal.

Peterson's band of colorful, wisecracking defense attorneys ? who joked outside court that Stacy Peterson could show up any day to take the stand ? committed their own share of errors.

As they sought to blunt the credibility of hearsay, for instance, they ended up prompting one of their own witnesses to repeatedly emphasize that Stacy Peterson was convinced her husband did kill Savio.

Peterson could still win release someday. His attorneys have said they may appeal all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court on grounds Illinois' hearsay law is unconstitutional.

Some legal experts worried about the precedent a conviction dependent on hearsay would set, saying it could open the floodgates for the admissibility of such evidence in Illinois and elsewhere.

Paul Ryan: Democratic Party platform changes on Israel 'tragic'

WOODSTOCK, Vt. ? Republican vice president nominee Paul Ryan sharply criticized Democrats for removing a passage from their 2012 platform stating that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel?language that was part of the party document in 2008.

?This is tragic,? Ryan said during a Wednesday morning appearance on "Fox & Friends." "Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. Mitt Romney and I are very clear on this?. What is so tragic about this is that this is one of the few issues where the Republican Party and the Democratic Party agreed.?

??Our two party platforms were emphatic about Jerusalem being the capital of Israel, the issues surrounding the right of return, and Hamas," he said.?

The status of Jerusalem, which is the legal capital of Israel, is a central point of dispute in Israeli-Palestinian relations. The Palestinians hope to make Jerusalem the capital of an independent state. The two sides have agreed to resolve the issue in negotiations.

PHOTOS: Paul Ryan's past

Because of the controversy, the U.S. government has kept its embassy in Tel Aviv.

Although Congress passed a law in 1995 ordering the State Department to move the embassy to Jerusalem, Presidents Clinton, George W. Bush and Obama have not complied, arguing that Congress had infringed on the executive branch?s ability to conduct foreign affairs.

In 2008, the Democratic Party platform stated that ?Jerusalem is and will remain the capital of Israel. The parties have agreed that Jerusalem is a matter for final status negotiations. It should remain an undivided city accessible to people of all faiths.?

Ryan and Romney have argued that removing that language has undermined U.S. support for Israel, and accused Obama of trying to create distance between the U.S. and Israel. The Obama campaign quickly denied that charge.?

When asked about this year?s platform changes, Democratic officials said the status of Jerusalem should be resolved during final status negotiations between the Israelis and Palestinians.

?We will continue to work with the parties to resolve this issue as part of a two-state solution that secures the future of Israel as a Jewish state and the homeland of the Jewish people,? said Democratic National Committee spokeswoman Melanie Roussell.

During a speech in Israel at the end of July, Romney won huge cheers from the crowd when he said that it was ?a deeply moving experience to be in Jerusalem, the capital of Israel.?

PHOTOS: Protests of the DNC

Obama won 78% percent of Jewish vote in 2008, according to exit polling, and his reelection campaign is working to keep those voters in the Democratic column.?

Romney has argued that he would be a more forceful advocate for Israel, particularly with the threat posed by Iran?s nuclear development program.

Earlier this summer, the Republican Jewish Coalition announced a $6.5-million campaign in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida that would focus on "buyer's remorse" among Jewish voters who backed Obama.

In a statement Tuesday, Romney said that as president he would ?restore our relationship with Israel and stand shoulder to shoulder with our close ally.?

The Secrets To Good Nutrition: What You Need To Know : Premier ...

Posted by haleyjonas on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

You do not have to have a background in science to understand how to make nutritious and healthy food choices. Here are some suggestions on how you can make good choices when it comes to food. It really is pretty easy to get good nutrition.

In order to add vitamins to your diet and increase your nutrition levels, you should consider drinking fruit juice. That doesn?t mean just a glass of orange juice; get creative and try vegetable juices like carrot or beet. Different nutritious juices can be blended to produce a taste you like. Juices like these are rich in nutrients, which makes them very healthy.

TIP! Starting your day without a healthy breakfast will get you started on the wrong foot. People erroneously assume that passing on breakfast will cut their daily calorie consumption.

Eat more fruits and vegetables! Brightly hued varieties of fruits and vegetables will provide you with optimum levels of nutrition and often contain few calories. Try and include a brightly colored food or two in every meal that you prepare. Much of the antioxidant properties are found in the skins. So, if you can eat the skin, do not peel it from the fruit or vegetable.

Try to record your progress. For instance, if you suffer from high blood pressure, keep a record of any improvement in your numbers. It is a great idea to record how much weight you have lost throughout the diet.

TIP! Try using whole wheat flour for healthier baking. The reason is because whole wheat flour contains additional fiber and nutrients that are not found in white flour.

Giving up soda entirely is one of the best things you can do for your health and your weight. Most sugary drinks, like soda, contain extremely high levels of corn syrup. Many sodas contain citric acid, a potentially harmful chemical that can rot your teeth. Bacteria in your mouth will thrive on the sugars in soda pop. They can produce a chemical change that adds to the damage of citric acid.

Stay away from any foods that have a large amount of trans fat because foods that have trans fat are processed. Foods that are high in trans fat are more likely to cause heart disease. Trans fat increases the level of bad, or LDL, cholesterol while decreasing good, or HDL levels.

TIP! You may be able to entice your children to try new foods by describing the feel and texture of the food, rather than trying to simply convince them it tastes good. Describing the texture, for example, might interest them enough to try it.

There are some great dishes made from eggplant, including baba ghanoush and eggplant parmesan. Not only is it very versatile, eggplant has folic acid, manganese, potassium, and many antioxidants within.

Highly milled grains are not a good nutritional choice. Eliminating the husk or hull of these grains throws out the main source of nutrients and fiber. Why get rid of this from the grains you eat to only replace it with wheat germ or other additives? Certainly not.

TIP! Cooking more of your meals in your own kitchen can make it easier for you to eat nutritious foods. By steaming or boiling your food as opposed to frying it, you will be able to cut down on fat.

Find substitutes for your high-fat dairy ingredients. There are many low-calorie and low-fat alternatives for things that we eat or drink every day. A rich dip made from sour cream can use yogurt as a healthy substitute. Evaporated fat-free milk can be used in place of cream. Cream cheese can be replaced with ricotta cheese. Not only do these products taste good, but they are lower in calories.

Eating nutritious foods is good for your health, partaking in a healthy and balanced diet will help you feel and look your best. Refined sugars are not healthy for the body, so decrease or eliminate them, whenever possible. To reduce sugar intake, keep a close eye on food labels, especially on beverages like juice or soda pop. You should do your best to stay away from foods with a high glucose content. You can lose weight just by reducing your sugar intake. You will not only feel better but you will have a better appearance.

TIP! Instead of eating the whole egg, eat just the whites instead. The yolk of an egg is filled with unhealthy cholesterol, and it is better to leave it out of your meal.

Track your meals with a simple online diet tracker. If you have gained a few pounds recently, take note of what you have been eating. High carbohydrate meals and high fat meals may cause you to gain weight if you are not exercising. If you document and track what you are eating at every meal, you can get a better overall picture of your dietary intake and make adjustments from that.

Be sure you read the labels on your food, so you know what?s in them. Double check all foods because some foods that are labeled ?reduced-fat? are actually higher in salt, sugar and a variety of other unhealthy additives. When you are trying to lose weight you should avoid highly processed foods. If the label has a lot of words you don?t understand, it?s probably not healthy. The foods you consume should not contain many artificial ingredients.

TIP! Good nutritional habits tend to reap rewards mentally, in addition to the obvious physical benefits. When you aren?t getting enough of certain vitamins, you could become tired and depressed.

An important component any healthy diet is riboflavin. Riboflavin acts as a key that releases energy from the foods that we eat. The body also needs it for metabolic processing and iron distribution. Whole grain products and dairy products have a high Riboflavin content.

Eggs can provide the needed protein to keep your diet rich in nutrients; consider consuming a minimum of one egg daily. You can choose to eat only the egg whites if you are concerned about your cholesterol or the fat that is contained in the yolk of an egg. Egg whites contain riboflavin, niacin, and folate for great nutrition without the fat or cholesterol.

TIP! You can buy fruit juice if you don?t like preparing veggies and fruits. Fruit juices are a great way to get your daily dose of vitamins and mineral without have to waste time pealing, chopping and cooking.

Consume daily servings of high-quality meats. Healthy proteins, like those found in lean meat, are important for increasing and maintaining muscle mass. The type of meat you eat is not important, just make sure you are providing your muscles with the nutrients they need. You should look to eat at least 10 ounces of meat daily.

Take into account how much sugary drinks you are taking in, and cut that number in half, replacing the sugary drinks with water. It?s easy to fall into the trap of drinking sodas because of their availability, but your body will be much better off if you replace soda with water. Having a sense of how many unhealthy sugared drinks you are consuming is the first step to changing your habits.

TIP! Serve your children healthy, low-fat baked potatoes instead of french fries. Try decorating each half with vegetables or cheese to make funny faces or other appealing designs.

Get rid of things that are bad for you such as sugary or salty snacks. Replace these unhealthy foods with a healthy variety of low-fat pretzels, plain popcorn and other healthy snacks to keep you satisfied when you get the munchies.

If you are planning on a diet that gives you better nutrition, do not ever forget breakfast. It is often stated that breakfast provides an important start to your day. This is because breakfast jump-starts your metabolism, and provides you with essential nutrients.

TIP! Just because the foods you?re eating are nutritious doesn?t mean you can eat massive servings of them. Portion size is crucial when it comes to weight loss.

A ton of people are really getting into using coupons. You see people purchasing thousands of dollars of groceries for next to nothing on TV. But a lot of this food is incredibly unhealthy. Coupon deals usually seem to be for high-fat, high-calorie products.

Juicing is the perfect way to get your daily fruits, vegetables, vitamins and minerals. To add a little something extra to your fruit juice blend, try some veggies. Adding a bit of ginger to some of your blends, particularly carrot apple, will give them a zip. For a spicy kick, try adding a bit of jalapeno.

TIP! Simply assuming that everything you consume is healthy can lead to disastrous consequences. Try looking at something like seven-grain bread and discovering that there are no listed whole grains on its labels.

Sweet potatoes, bananas, beans and tomatoes are nutritious foods that keep potassium levels high. The potassium will be used by your body to keep blood pressure low and will prevent diabetes, heart disease and other ailments. Eating yogurt and drinking plenty of milk will also provide you with potassium, as will other dairy items.

Eat foods from all over the world. If you continue to eat the same foods over and over, they can become quite boring. There are so many options out there, you don?t have to settle for eating the same thing.

TIP! You can lower your sugar and salt consumption over time by slowly reducing the amount with which you cook. After a while, you will no longer crave them, which will help improve your health.

A great way to still be able to enjoy things, like burgers and spaghetti, is to substitute ground turkey for ground beef. You may notice some differences in taste, but there are some simple solutions until you get used to the change. To combat this, enhance the turkey?s juices with onions and olive oil. It contains far less fat, and it packs wonderful flavor.

If you suffer from diabetes, you need to consult your physician prior to consuming alcoholic beverages. Having alcoholic drinks when you are a diabetic can be dangerous since your blood sugar level can be lowered.

TIP! Scan the nutrition information of foods before you buy them. Try to stay away from things with five percent or more of sodium, cholesterol, total fat and saturated fat.

Is your mind on healthy eating, but your daily schedule doesn?t allow for it? Entertain the thought of preparing most of your daily meals in your own kitchen. By doing this, you will not have to cook each night, yet your family can enjoy a nutritious meal each evening.

If you are eating mushrooms, make sure that you cook them well. Cooking them very well will help break down some of the carcinogens. These natural toxins could otherwise be harmful to your health. You need to watch your health. This will make it easier to burn fat.

You should choose whole grain products over white flour. Whole grain foods have a higher content of fiber and protein, than those products which are more processed and bleached. Whole grain foods can reduce cholesterol and keep you feeling full. Look for the word ?whole? at the beginning of the ingredients list.

Most people, when they think about nutrition, automatically think about food intake, but liquid intake is a huge factor as well. Focus on reducing the amount of calories you consume in beverages each day. Liquids from soda to coffee to booze give you no good nutrients; what they provide are plenty of surplus calories that you will want to eliminate.

When you begin using the above tips in your daily life, you?ll find it easier to make nutritious choices without having to think much about it. Once you get the basics, it gets easier to incorporate good nutrition into your daily life. Good health to you!

In fact, recently Google founder Sergey Brin is investing in real estate in the ?tech-savvy? town of Los Altos, California. Thanks to Brin, the town of about 30,000 is quickly moving from a quaint town to the perfect place for tech executives to live, work and play.

Even celebrities are interested in the current real estate market. For example, even Selena Gomez is currently investing in real estate with her recent purchase of Jonah Hill?s former Tarzana, California home for $2.9 million.

Investors are definitely taking more of an interest in the current real estate market, especially with talks of real estate market recovery amidst rising home prices.

However, how do you market to the everyday person? In one word: Online.

Marketing to Everyday Homebuyers

Your average person spends a considerable amount of time online every single day. Although many real estate professionals have started to utilize social media platforms such as YouTube and Facebook, the future of real estate market is online-moving far away from the traditional marketing of newspapers, local real estate property guides, and billboards.

As mentioned earlier, there are some incredible investment opportunities in the current real estate market. Therefore, you are not only attempting to attract local homebuyers, but also investors from across the country and even internationally.

The only way to effectively reach these populations is to turn your attention online.

Moving Beyond YouTube Videos

Many real estate professionals have taken to YouTube for digital tours, making it more convenient for potential homebuyers and investors to get a quick glimpse of the property from the comfort of their home. However, the future calls for more active online marketing and an adaption of traditional marketing strategies to meet the demands of consumers and investors alike.

Let?s face it, people are already utilizing their mobile devices and tablets to do everything from searching for real estate to keeping up-to-date with social media. In the future, real estate professions will have to offer user-friendly apps that are designed for mobile devices and tablets.

What to Include in Your Mobile App

What, exactly, does your mobile app need to make the greatest impact?

  • Property listings with detailed information
  • Contact information for the seller/realtor
  • Virtual tours of each property
  • Maps of property location and surrounding attractions
  • Mortgage calculators
  • Local and national lender contact information
  • Etc.

The opportunities are endless, but the key for future real estate marketing is to adapt to future generations-a generation that goes online first; therefore, successful real estate professionals will provide everything needed to sell a property from a user-friendly app for mobile devices and tablets.
