GFF announces first winner of RBC Emerging Filmmakers ...

GIMLI, July 27, 2012 ? The first ever winner of the RBC Emerging Filmmaker Award was announced last night at the Gimli Film Festival. Five hopeful filmmakers pitched their short film projects to a panel of professional film producers and a large, enthusiastic audience in the darkened auditorium of Gimli Theatre. After a brief period to weigh the projects, the judges unanimously awarded the $10,000 prize to Manitoba filmmaker Justina Neepin.

With the cash award, Ms Neepin can begin to work on a short film she has called MARK, a mysterious encounter between a young, optimistic man and a beautiful woman at a bus stop. She will create the project with her sister, who had expected to be apart of the pitch until moments before.

?We were both so nervous,? said the beaming winner?s sister, Jenna Neepin, who will co-produce the project.? ?Moments before the pitch, Justina looked at me and said, ?I?ve got this.? And she did. She nailed it. I am so proud of her.?

When awarding the prize, Kim Todd, one of five judges said, ?The art of film is to tell a story with characters and pictures. When she (Justina) was speaking you could have heard a pin drop.?

Ms Neepin holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Manitoba and completed the National Screen Institute New Voices program in July 2011. She is currently a Production Coordinator for a documentary series produced by Animiki See Digital Production Inc.

The winners received $10,000 courtesy of RBC towards the production of their film, a story-editing mentorship opportunity with the National Screen Institute Canada, one-year of mentoring from a Manitoba production company, one-year membership to On Screen Manitoba; and premiere screening of their film at the 2013 Gimli Film Festival.

Representatives from RBC were on hand to deliver the prize personally. ?We are so delighted to support our local film industry and our talented emerging filmmakers,? said Rob Johnston, Regional President, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Northern Ontario of RBC.? ?We are proud to work alongside RBC in supporting emerging filmmakers across the country,? said Cheryl Ashton, Festival Director.
