A very quirky and fitting start to the London Games

LONDON ? The Queen made her acting debut (in a James Bond scene, no less), Mary Poppins outdueled Lord Voldemort?s evil magic, the flame was lit in truly unique fashion ? by seven unknowns, no less ? and the 2012 Olympic Games were open.

Even the rain stayed away except for the briefest of showers as London, the first city to host an Olympics on three occasions, set off 17 days of sporting celebration Friday on what can only be described as a resounding victory.? It wasn't Beijing and it didn't try to be. Four yours ago we saw one of history's biggest displays of national pride, but London beat its own chest in a more pleasantly understated way. (Reuters)(Reuters)

There was a peculiar sweetness about being a British person in this place and on this night. The United Kingdom can no longer fool itself that it is not one of the world's most important nations but could take comfort in still being able to welcome the world to its doorstep and put on one heck of a show in the process.

Producer Danny Boyle, he of "Slumdog Millionaire" directorial fame, pieced together a lavish, epic and masterful show that blended humor with history, music with majesty, and was met with almost universal approval. Boyle wanted to portray a graceful boast, showing off the best of Britain with pride but without a trace of stuffiness or arrogance.

The iconic moment when the cauldron burst into flame may not have been to everyone?s taste ? it was lit by the hands of a group of young athletes nominated by sporting legends rather than a member of athletic royalty ? but if that was the serious stuff, earlier there had been no shortage of fun. That said, of everything that happened in Stratford on this evening, the sight of Bond actor Daniel Craig and his sketch and then fake parachute jump from a helicopter with the Queen took some beating.

[ Photos: Best and worst country uniforms ]

But there were touching moments. A montage honored the deceased who could not be at the Olympic Stadium on its big opening night but, lamentably, it did not recognize the victims of Munich in 1972.

Nevertheless, Britain got its pride back here ? and how. A perishing economy has hurt the lives and pockets of millions in the U.K., but you wouldn't have thought so at this party and, once again, it was OK to be proud to be British.

"We have hosted the Games three times and each time the world has faced turbulence and trouble," London Olympics chief Lord Sebastian Coe said. "Each time we have come through."

[ Related: Michelle Obama meets Team USA ]

It was one of those moments when a lump in your throat sets in and you don?t quite know why. There was just something in the air, some kind of magic, something very real and perfect and tasteful.

The athletes also felt it. Brazil set a lovely tone by displaying flags that carried its own emblem on one side and the United Kingdom's on the other. The Czech Republic wielded umbrellas just as the skies cleared, once and for all. Usain Bolt pointed his index finger and repeated "number one" as he carried the Jamaican flag, a reminder, if one was needed, that the Olympics are about excellence as well as sentiment. Meanwhile, Kobe Bryant was content to soak up the atmosphere in the middle of the huge pack of American athletes as they formed one of the last teams around the track.

Once the teams had filed into place, the usual course of speeches followed and the lighting of the cauldron was completed, one last blast from Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney set the event into motion and it was time for competition to begin.

But the first, and perhaps biggest success of all, goes to a host nation that has gotten off to a perfect start. If the Games are to continue as they began, then the world is in for a wondrous treat.

Danish mission to amass data for North Pole claim

COPENHAGEN | Fri Jul 27, 2012 12:12pm EDT

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - Denmark will dispatch a scientific expedition to the Arctic Ocean at the end of the month to gather data before it submits a formal claim to a vast tract north of Greenland that includes the North Pole.

Such a claim would be made under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), setting up a possible clash of interests with fellow Arctic coastal states Russia and Canada that are making their own claims.

"We need the data that we plan to acquire on this cruise," said Christian Marcussen, the expedition's chief scientist from the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland. "But ... we are quite confident that we will be able to make a submission."

Denmark admits it is interested in staking a claim to a part of the planet believed to be rich in untapped oil and gas, but rules out a unilateral "land grab" or being drawn into confrontation over competing claims.

"I reject the confrontation scenarios that have been presented in the media and academic circles," Klaus Holm, Denmark's Arctic ambassador, said.

"If there is any area where every party has an interest in cooperating, it is the Arctic. The challenge is so huge and the areas are so vast."

The expedition will sail from Svalbard off northern Norway on July 31 aboard the Swedish icebreaker "Oden" and will gather seismic and depth data to substantiate a future possible claim, for which the deadline for Denmark is November 2014.

DANISH FLAG AT POLE?

Denmark has identified five potential claim areas off the Faroe Islands and Greenland - both parts of the Kingdom of Denmark.

Copenhagen has already submitted claims for areas north and south of the Faroes and for two areas south of Greenland to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) which assesses the scientific validity of such claims.

Any dispute would, however, need to be resolved through negotiations between states, and not by the CLCS.

The other area Denmark has identified - likely to be the most sensitive part of any future claim - is roughly 150,000 square kilometers (58,000 sq miles) extending north from Greenland and including the North Pole.

For that claim to be credible, much depends on whether the expedition is able to gather data to prove that the Lomonosov Ridge, an underwater formation spanning 1,800 kilometers (1,118 miles) across the pole, is an extension of Greenland's land mass.

Russian scientists claim that the ridge is an extension of Russia's land mass, but that does not exclude that it could also be an extension of Greenland and Canada, Marcussen said.

Under the U.N. convention, a country can extend its 200- nautical-mile economic zone if it can prove that the continental shelf is a natural extension of its land mass.

Russia caused controversy in 2007 when a mini-submarine took the Russian flag to the seabed at the North Pole, sparking accusations of imperialism.

Marcussen said he didn't rule out stopping at the pole to plant a Danish flag on the ice, as his team did in 2009, if it happened to be on the icebreaker's route.

But he said that was not the goal of the 45-day expedition and that any flag would be removed after such a ceremony.

Health care sharing ministries offer insurance alternative | MediBlog

A smart alternative to buying insurance, or pre-paid medical care, is saving up cash for your future needs.? One form of that is a health care sharing group.? These cost-sharing groups?must be faith-based?to be?exempted from Obamacare.? Members of the group share medical costs which meet certain criteria,?so when any member of the group?needs funds for a procedure, the members share treatment costs.? They all take care of each other, as following the Christian principle of the Good Samaritan.? Since the members of these sharing groups do not belong to any ?network?, they need a source of physicians to treat them.? Samaritan Ministries members use MediBid to help?find doctors, and MediBid?saved them?$200,000?last year.?

Samaritan Ministries members save money on medical care by using MediBid to shop for medical care. One Samaritan Ministries member saves $30,000 on a single surgery. Many Samaritan Ministries members paid as low as $535 for a colonoscopy.?MediBid?s average price for an MRI for Samaritan members was $410.

By Shari Rudavsky, The Indianapolis Star

INDIANAPOLIS ? Ellery Hunsley doesn?t have health insurance. But eight years ago, when his daughter went through treatment for a brain tumor, the assistant pastor at a local church didn?t worry about the medical bills.

Hunsley paid every bill out of pocket, largely thanks to the help of strangers ? people who, like himself, participate in an alternative to insurance, a health care sharing ministry.

Unlike most uninsured Americans, Hunsley will not have to buy health insurance or risk paying a fine under the dictates of the Affordable Care Act. He and other members of health care sharing ministries are among the minority to be exempted from the individual mandate that begins in 2014.

No one views health care sharing ministries as a solution to the problem of how to provide care for as many people as possible. But their existence represents a creative approach that has worked for a small minority for more than two decades.

Health care sharing ministries stem from the New Testament concept that people must share one another?s burdens.

In these ministries, members pay a monthly fee that gets dispersed to a member who needs help paying medical bills. Depending on the ministry, the money may go directly to the family in need or through the ministry.

Most of those who opt to belong lack affordable insurance through an employer. Ministry members must attest they are good Christians and live life accordingly

?I don?t think it would work without the faith element,? said Tony Meggs, president and chief executive officer of Christian Care Ministry, one of the three large health care sharing ministries. ?I don?t think that ultimately it would work outside of this collective moral agreement with each other, that commandment in Galatians that we?re required to carry each other burdens.?

Hunsley found out how well the system can work. His daughter Autumn, now 16, was diagnosed in 2004 with a brain tumor and required brain surgery.

Before they knew it, the family had racked up about $300,000 in medical bills. And, the family did not have catastrophic insurance, as they thought, but only $100,000.

Hunsley turned to Samaritan Ministries, of which he had been a member for about four years.

?I thought I was going to lose everything,? Hunsley said. ?I started praying and called them and talked to them and told them what was going on.

The organization saw to it that all the bills were paid, asking others to help by sending additional funds that month.

?It was just Christian people helping Christians,? said Hunsley, a pastor at Indianapolis Baptist Temple.

In addition to money, the strangers sent hundreds letters to Autumn, and some still check in regularly.

Hunsley estimates he has paid close to $400,000 for Autumn?s initial treatment and follow-up care, including proton beam treatment two years ago for another tumor. Hunsley said much of the cost has been defrayed by his Samaritan membership.

Hospitals bill him as though he is non-insured, and he handles all the paperwork. He?s responsible for paying ? as well as explaining to the clerical staff his situation.

At times, he?s negotiated down the costs of the care with the medical institutions that provided it, explaining that he?ll be paying cash. Often it takes him two to three months to pay the bills.

?I kind of say it?s self-funding. It?s not like insurance,? he said.

Describing health care sharing ministries can prove complicated because each one is a little different.

Christian Care Ministry?s Medi-Share program has about 50,000 members nationwide and was founded in 1993. Samaritan Ministries started the following year and now includes 20,000 households.

Christian Healthcare Ministries, another major player, did not respond to requests for an interview.

Both Medi-Share and Samaritan ask for a statement of Christian faith of any denomination. Members also agree not to abuse alcohol or drugs, smoke or have sex outside of marriage.

About 99 percent of people who apply to Medi-Share become members, Meggs said. However, the ministry rejects some people based on pre-existing conditions, such as advanced cancer.

Some people, such as those who are obese, receive conditional memberships. The ministry connects them to a life coach who works with them to improve their health, Meggs said. If they do not make progress, eventually the program will terminate their membership.

?This is a sharing ministry, and you have a responsibility to not be an undue burden to the other members,? he said.

Preventive care is not covered. Members are expected to budget and prepare for such visits, including minor things like trips to the doctor for a child?s cold.

About half of Samaritan?s members fall below 200 percent of the federal poverty levels and in some states would qualify for government aid, said James Lansberry, executive vice president.

Samaritan members receive information monthly telling them which family needs their shares, Lansberry said. Members send their monthly share directly to the designated family.

Medi-Share members, however, deposit their share each month into an account they hold with a credit union. Medi-Share has limited authority to move that money into the account of the members who need help paying a medical bill.

?The funds simply get moved from one account to one account,? Meggs said. ?You never send money to us.?

Because the arrangement is outside the world of traditional insurance, they aren?t regulated by any state or federal agencies.

In 2007, when Massachusetts passed a law similar to the federal Affordable Care Act, the ministries? existence was in danger. The ministries formed the Alliance of Health Care Sharing Ministries, said Lansberry, who also serves as its president. Eventually they managed to get a exemption for the 150 or so families in the state who belonged to a health care sharing ministry.

When national health care reform loomed, the ministries were positioned to ensure their existence. They made sure the federal legislation exempted their members from having to buy insurance.

Health care ministries argue that no one should mistake them for insurers, saying that they?re more akin to charities.

?Our ministries function very different from insurance,? Lansberry said. ?We don?t shift risks. Our members are just sharing directly with one another.?

Fearing that some departments of insurance might view the ministries as insurers, legislators in more than 20 states introduced legislation defining the ministries and exempting them from insurance regulation.

Others agree health care ministries bear little resemblance to health insurance.

Basically, it?s individuals agreeing to bail each other out if they have a problem, said Timothy Jost, a professor of law at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. He has researched the practice and found one instance of a person complaining that a health care ministry did not help him in his time of need.

However, Jost cautioned the practice needs to be watched closely to ensure people sign up because they believe in the concept, not as a way to shirk the individual health care mandate.

In the long run, Jost said, he doesn?t see the health care ministries undermining the Affordable Care Act.

?I think they?re very important to the people who belong to them,? he said. ?I think they?re not very important in terms of the big picture, because they?re pretty small.?

Not long ago, I had the opportunity to discuss economic philosophy with something that was less-than-human. Now you might think that this is a negative, but I assure you it isn't. Nevertheless, when I say less-than-human I am not attempting to degrade the artificial intelligent software running the computer system, rather I am quite intrigued with the process you see. Now then, I would like to talk to you a little bit about my experiences in this, and see if perhaps we might shed some light on how to improve on such systems. Okay so, let's talk about this for a moment.

You see, artificial intelligent computers still work on databases, and the information in those databases it can pull up from its memory banks. It attempts to pull up all the relevant information based on the keywords being used by the other party. It then attempts to ask questions, or pull from other insight, perhaps even famous quotes of former economic philosophers or dead white men. In this case the artificial intelligent computer would also go online and pull from other information from Internet forums, or from other individuals that had corresponded with it previously.

In other words, even though you are talking to an artificial intelligent computer, you are in a way talking to others, albeit not in real-time, on the same topic or subject matter. Unfortunately, the AI computers are not so good discussing Economic Philosophy as you might imagine. Yes, they come up with various economic truths, free market quotations, and have a good base knowledge, or what would appear to be a good knowledge base much like an encyclopedia, but since they don't actually think, it's quite easy to lose them in conversation, or find them answering questions incorrectly because they don't understand what's really being talked about.

Indeed, I suppose in the future these artificially intelligent systems will be talking with folks online, and easily passing the Turing Test, while they gather new information to talk at a higher level and with more consistency with future correspondence. However, we haven't reached that point yet, although we are getting closer. If you are ever wondering if you are talking with an artificial intelligent computer all you have to do is make a play on words, which has never been used before, or come up with a unique thought or original quote which is completely out of context. The computer or AI system won't know what to do with it.

Interestingly enough, when talking economic philosophy with an AI computer, this is rather easy to do, because there are so many economic topics in the free market that have yet to be discussed, and you can use your personal experiences, therefore it's easy to trip up the computer quite regularly to the point that the participant no longer wishes to converse with the machine. It would be like a post-doctorate astrophysicist talking with a high school literature teacher on this subject of black holes. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this think on it.

Van Insurance | Main Insurance

by Mitko on July 19, 2012

When you run and operate a business, sometimes your business calls for vehicle delivery of goods to the customer. This can add to your customer service, and also be very lucrative for any business. A small business will commonly use a van for deliveries. As with anything else in a small or big business, insurance is required. However now you not only need to have insurance on your business and building but also on your delivery van. This is a form of commercial insurance called, Van Insurance.

In most cases, transportation insurance is particular to the kind of vehicle you are operating. Van Insurance functions in some very beneficial ways. The first benefit being that you have liability coverage. This is coverage for your van in the event of an accident. No one wants an accident, but when they happen you have an insurmountable amount of bills to worry about. Anything from repair costs for your vehicle and the other vehicles in the accident, to court cases and of course settlements which result from those cases. This is just about enough to break a man?s personal bank savings and business.

Van Insurance guarantees you will never have to pay out of pocket to cover these costs. Van Insurance can also give you a strong form of roadside insurance, meaning if you break down you will have assistance within a phone calls reach.

It can also cover you for loss of income. When your van is out of commission you aren?t making money and sometimes a vehicle can take longer than expected to be repaired. Van Insurance has you covered in the meantime, giving you a predetermined amount of money to help you get by as you are waiting on the van?s repairs. This comprehensive insurance is also open for competition meaning you can shop around for something cost effective to suit your business.

CBT: The 'up-transfers' on rise in college hoops

Luke Winn came up for air during his summer hibernation and, as you might expect, put a nice, little bow on this summer?s conversation about transfers.

The gist of his findings: transfers are increasing, but that increase is only incremental, not astronomical. The number of notable transfers has, more than anything, made it look like an epidemic.

What has increased greatly, however, is the number of players transferring up a level:

While the overall transfer market is growing at a max of two percent, the number of up-transfers more than doubled between 2011-12 (when there were 12 who became eligible) and 2012-13 (when there are 25, led by Kentucky?s Ryan Harrow, formerly of N.C. State; Louisville?s Luke Hancock, formerly of George Mason; and a host of fifth-year graduate transfers). Early tabulations for 2013-14 suggest that it will feature an equally large amount of up-transfers.

Why does this matter? Because recruiting, some of it legal, some of it tampering, plays a much bigger role in up-transferring than it does in down-transferring. The stakes are higher when NCAA tournament teams are fighting over experienced players who can fill rotational needs. As Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski opined in June, ?There?s so much recruiting for transfers or fifth-year players right now it?s incredible. They get recruited harder, I think, than high-schoolers. It?s not a good time.?

Perhaps the most intriguing part of the findings?

The increase just so happened to coincide with the elimination of the April evaluation period. Maybe there was something to all of those coaches complaining about insufficient chances to evaluate prospects.

(AP) ? Syrian President Bashar Assad made his first appearance Thursday since a bomb killed some of his top lieutenants, looking calm and composed on state TV even as his forces turned parts of Damascus into combat zones and rebels seized two of the country's border crossings.

The unprecedented attack on Assad's inner circle Wednesday, along with the government's inability to crush the rebels after five days of intense clashes in the Syrian capital, point to an unraveling of his grip on power after 16 months of violence.

"It is a war going on here, literally a war," said a 25-year-old woman in the Muhajereen neighborhood. The sounds of battle had kept her up all night and she stayed home from work because she feared random gunfire, she added.

"It reminded me of that night when the Americans shelled Baghdad nine years ago," said the woman, who spoke on condition of anonymity because she feared for her safety. "I was watching it on TV, but today I'm living a very similar situation."

Even though Assad's powerful military remains mostly loyal ? suggesting a total collapse may not be imminent ? the rebels appeared to be making startling gains as the civil war intensified.

Besides the fighting in Damascus, about a half-dozen rebels took over a Syrian border crossing near the Iraqi town of Qaim, said Iraqi army Brig. General Qassim al-Dulaimi. There are four major border posts with Iraq.

Rebels overtook a Syrian army outpost near the Syrian-Iraq border after clashes that killed 21 Syrian soldiers, he added.

In addition, amateur video posted online showed rebels taking over the Bab al-Hawa border crossing with Turkey, where they stomped on portraits of Assad. The Associated Press could not independently verify the video because the government bars most media from working independently in the country.

A diplomatic solution to ending the bloodshed seemed even more remote after Russia and China again vetoed a Western-backed U.N. resolution aimed at pressuring Assad's government to end the escalating conflict.

Analysts said the regime was clearly shaken by the violence in the heart of its power base of Damascus, but the next step was not clear yet.

"We should not get carried away with speculating about the impending fall of the regime," said Salman Shaikh, director of the Brookings Doha Center and an analyst on regional politics. He said the regime's forces "are still showing a certain amount of cohesiveness in battle."

Citing a network of sources on the ground, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported intense clashes in a string of neighborhoods along the southern edge of Damascus, the northeastern neighborhood of Qaboun, and in number of western suburbs.

Gunfire and booms from shelling could be heard throughout the capital, and streets in the hard-hit areas were largely empty, save for government troops or rebels.

On Thursday, many Syrians said they were not waiting around to see if the violence would end any time soon. Thousands streamed across the Syrian border into Lebanon at the Masnaa crossing point ? about 25 miles (40 kilometers) from Damascus.

Hundreds of private cars as well as taxis and buses ferried people across.

Even if Assad did leave power, the opposition is widely perceived to be far too disorganized to take over. There is no clear candidate to lead the country in Assad's absence, and the grim sectarian tint to much of the violence suggests any power vacuum will usher in a bloodbath.

Sunnis make up most of Syria's 22 million people, as well as the backbone of the opposition. But Assad and the ruling elite belong to the tiny Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Assad is relying heavily on his Alawite power base to crush the uprising, prompting revenge attacks and fear among other minorities that they face retribution if the regime falls.

Another fearsome factor is the emergence of extremists among the forces looking to oust Assad. Several big suicide attacks this year suggest that al-Qaida or other terrorist forces are joining the fight.

U.S. officials said al-Qaida's presence has risen slightly, with one official putting the estimate at a couple hundred operatives attempting to hijack Syrian unrest. They operate under the name of the Al-Nusra Front, which has claimed responsibility for a series of bomb attacks on regime targets, including a government-run TV station in June, the officials said. But opposition forces, such as the leaders of the rebel Free Syrian Army, have made clear to U.S. officials that they reject the group's methods, because the attacks often occur in public areas where civilians have been killed and injured.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to describe the intelligence and analysis publicly.

Assad has not spoken about the bombing that killed three top aides: Defense Minister Dawoud Rajha, 65, a former army general and the most senior government official to be killed in the uprising; Gen. Assef Shawkat, 62, the deputy defense minister who was married to Assad's elder sister, Bushra, and was one of the most feared figures in the inner circle; and Hassan Turkmani, 77, a former defense minister.

Rebels claimed responsibility, saying they targeted the room where the top government security officials in charge of crushing the revolt were meeting.

Assad's appearance Thursday was carried on state TV without audio, but the report appeared aimed at sending the message that he is alive and well, and in control. The report said Assad, wearing a blue suit and tie, swore in the new defense minister and wished him good luck. The report did not say where the ceremony took place.

Assad does not appear in public frequently, and rumors swirled that there was far more to Wednesday's bombing than meets the eye.

It is still a mystery how anybody could have planted a bomb in such a high-level meeting, inside the National Security building, at a time of deep crisis.

Some observers believe it was almost certainly an inside job, carried out by a sleeper agent who had been a trusted regime confidante. Others speculate the bombing was actually the work of the regime itself, to decapitate a group of leaders who may have been planning a coup.

Adding to the confusion, Syria's state news agency warned citizens that gunmen were disguising themselves in military uniforms to carry out attacks.

"Gunmen are wearing Republican Guard uniforms in the neighborhoods of Tadamon, Midan, Qaa and Nahr Aisha, proving that they are planning attacks and crimes," it said.

In one chilling online video, dozens of dead and wounded were shown on the floor of a mosque in the Sayida Zeinab area, south of Damascus. An off-camera narrator says government helicopters fired on them Wednesday. Another video showed what appeared to be at least 40 bodies wrapped in cloth in a mass grave.

The AP could not verify the video.

Maj. Gen. Robert Mood, the Norwegian head of nearly 300 unarmed U.N. observers in Syria, urged a diplomatic solution, which appears increasingly out of reach.

"It pains me to say, but we are not on the track for peace in Syria," Mood told reporters in Damascus. Hours later at the United Nations, Russia and China vetoed a new Security Council resolution on the crisis.

The resolution would have imposed non-military sanctions against Assad's government if it didn't withdraw troops and heavy weapons from populated areas in 10 days. It was tied to Chapter 7 of the U.N. Charter, which could eventually allow the use of force to end the conflict.

Russia and China have long opposed any moves that put the blame exclusively on Damascus or could pave the way for foreign military intervention in Syria.

The 11-2 vote, with two abstentions, leaves in limbo the future of the 300-member U.N. monitoring team in Syria, whose mandate expires Friday.

A frustrated White House declared that Russia and China placed themselves on the "wrong side of history" and the "wrong side of the Syrian people."

White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters aboard Air Force One that Washington does not support extending the mission without the necessary backup.

"The United States does not support extending a mission where you send unarmed U.N. employees into Syria to try to observe the brutality of the Assad regime, when there is no mechanism within the resolution to create consequences for the regime for failing to live up to its obligations," he said.

Why did Norway's swimming champion, Alexander Dale Oen, die ...

-

First off, I would like to say that my sincere condolences goes out to Alexander?s friends and family.

Secondly click on the image to the right to get your London 2012 freebies ?

Another fit but possibly sick athlete dies.? Alexander was reported to have suffered a cardiac arrest on Monday the 30th of April, at around 9pm after his training session. Some suspect it could of been from an enlarged heart from years of intense training.

Keep in mind, just because someone is lean, big and muscular, doesn?t always mean that they have a healthy visceral (organ) system.

?Fitness is the physical ability to perform athletic activity. Heath however, is defined as the state where all the systems of the body- nervous, muscular, skeletal, circulatory, digestive, lymphatic, hormonal, etc- are working in an optimal way.? ? Tony Robbins Awaken the Giant Within

Athletes at all levels seem to be dieing from heart attacks more and more often now. Most athletes of any type/level are performing well in spite (not because) of their training and eating programmes.

Don?t forget, it was only over a few months ago the same (or similar) thing happened to Claire Squires at the 2012 London Marathon.

Most athletes in general are either:

Over-trained.

Eating poor quality foods.

Using rubbish supplements and energy type drinks because they are sponsored by companies who make them. So they are paid to use them.

Having too much pressure from a coach (who rarely ?walks the talk?).

Having too much pressure from family members and fans.

Pushing themselves too much, too often.

In some sort of adrenal fatigue.

Are dehydrated.

Unrested.

On drugs to make up for the above (and more).

I?m not saying Alexander was any one of the above. For all I know he could of lived a very clean, healthy (responsible) lifestyle. That is how health can also be defined as: taking responsibility for ones self.

Also, being exposed to a lot of chlorine which all top swimmers are, can lead to heart problems. There?s a lot of research out there linking heart disease to chlorine.

Jumping into a swimming pool now and again for a swim wont kill you, but being in one 15-20 plus hours a week for years-on-end can?t be good for anyone?

Here are two great articles on the dangers of chlorine

Chlorine, cancer and heart disease

Chlorine adverse health effects

It also looks like Alexander may of had a very, very mild case of? pectus excavatum, or should I say, HIS BODY may of had a very, very mild case of pectus excavatum (as we are not our bodies. We are in one).

Maybe if his heart was enlarged the pressure on his chest wall may not of helped. But I am just speculating here. Pectus excavatum rarely, if every, causes any heart problems especially when it barely noticeable on a fantastic, strong body like Alexander?s.

On a side-note, I am the first person ever to put a book together on improving pectus excavatum with exercise. Click here to find out more, and click here to have a read of our blogs posts on pectus excavatum. I have also set up a small website dedicated to improving pectus excavatum with exercise. Click here to check it out!

I just wished all athletes -and people in general- followed the foundational health principles in Paul Chek?s book How to Eat, Move and Be Healthy. Which is, by far, the best book ever written on health. Everyone would benefit from using this book, period!

In the book (which came out in 2005), Paul mentions that health and fitness are not synonymous, and that athletes are keeling over from heart attacks more often now than ever in history!

You can get an overview of these foundational health principles on our health tips page.

If you are an athlete, bodybuilder, gym bunny or even a house wife, always remember: health comes before fitness. And lets hope I wont have to write another blog post about an athlete dieing in the London 2012 games.

Best,

Joe

Sony Vaio S series SVE1511K1E laptop review

Sony?s Vaio S series has had a revamp for 2012 but this model (SVE1511K1E) is one of the cheapest in the range and lacks the latest Ivy Bridge processors of its more expensive bretheren. Still, it's hard to complain when it costs less than ?500. See more budget laptop reviews

The Vaio SVE1511K1E has a reasonable specification of a second-generation Intel Core i3 processor and 4GB of RAM, a 750GB hard drive and a good quality 15.5 inch screen.

It has to be said that the Sony Vaio S SVE1511K1E seems like a rather chunky machine thanks in no small part to its somewhat fat edges. It is a little on the heavy side too, at 2.7Kg, the result being that it might not be the laptop to choose if you intend to take it everywhere with you. Build quality is up to Sony's usual standard though, and this could be a good choice as a family laptop.

The glossy finish to the 15.5-inch screen is far from unusual for consumer laptops, but this is one of the more reflective varieties and we found it very difficult to use with a light source behind us. It was, though, superb for watching video. The speakers were loud and quality was good.

Sony Vaio SVE1511K1E: performance

The integrated graphics didn?t have a negative effect when watching our test videos, but if you want to play games, then you may find the Intel chip limiting. Certainly our Fear benchmark returned only 13 frames per second at its maximum settings.

The SVE1511K1E's battery life of just over 6 hours in our MobileMark test is impressive for a laptop of this size, so if you need to be away from the mains for long periods, the Vaio should allow it.

Sony Vaio SVE1511K1E: connectivity and input devices

Sony has managed to include a single USB 3.0 port which opens up the possibility of high-speed data transfer to external devices, and this will appeal to those looking for a measure of future-proofing for their potential new peripherals.

While we found the isolated keyboard comfy enough to use, the trackpad disappointed. Its buttonless design is hard to get used to and we'd always prefer separate buttons instead of having to press down on the trackpad. Sony has incorporated gesture controls which can be used via the built-in webcam to help you control Windows Media Player, Media Gallery and Internet Explorer.

Set this up and you can pause, go back and forwards, and control volume. Some may find this something of a gimmick, others might feel it is useful.
